Opening remarks:

I
Professor Christoph Peters initiated the study course Molecular Medicine in Freiburg and is currently director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Cell Research of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. He is working on lysosomal peptidases, mucopolysaccharidosis type IV as well as on lysosomal protein targeting and additionally holds the office of the dean of the medical faculty.

Professor Nikolaus Pfanner is head of the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. For his work on mitochondrial transport systems he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award in 2004. Recently, N. Pfanner focuses on assembly and function of TIM-complexes and mitochondrial Hsp70 chaperones.

Opening Talk:

Professor Joachim Herz from the Southwestern Medical Center Dallas was applicably involved in the identification of the LDL-receptor and the LDL-receptor related protein (LRP). Later on, he focused on the effects of different LDL-receptors on Alzheimers disease, where LRP plays a pivotal role in regulatory processes such as vascular reorganisation or neuronal migration and positioning in the brain. The migration-controlling protein reelin is one example for an LRP ligand involved in neural development.
